Urban Gardening and Homesteading

The "Lot" in the Whitaker area of Eugene is run by a friend and local artist/plumber who has been in the Eugene area for many years. He purchased this small and wonderfully central parcel of land in the heart of town. As you will see already in the short amount of time he has put a "lot" of love into this once gravel parcel of land and totally transformed it.

Behind is the water tower with a loft bed, lookout, outdoor shower. In front is a garden made from straw bales soil and some very nice and mature plants.

Whats a "lot" without a "lot dog"? Kitchen, water tower, greenhouse, and garden areas.

That is how you create your own garden when you have a garden lot, and highly attractive and abundant as well!!!

Another view of the outdoor/indoor kitchen structure and lovely tree!

Myself in the loft area of the watertower, log stacked steps, and bamboo curtains.
This is the "Lot" summer 2012, we will see what 2013 summer brings!!!

Thanks for stopping by, hope you will be back soon!!! -Stacy-
PS Don't forget to follow my blog!!! I sure would appreciate it!

Community Garden 2012

Welcome to our community garden space.
Just grab a tool and start where ever you like.
Heck we'll even pour ya a glass of wine if you like ;)
Since I do not have much space of my own I have asked to utilize and help with a garden space at some friends house. This is great for me because I am highly motivated, will get to use as much produce as I like, and have partners to work with in the garden. Here are my two besties helping get motivated to start working.
Planting some lovely tomatoes and creating a nice walkway between the rows. My nephew is only 2 but we let him help, I believe that is how one develops a lifelong interest in gardening.

This is our large space, so large we have decided that its too much for our first year so we will be using about 3/4 of the space for gardening and 1/4 for a safe fire area.
We got a late start, but decided to plant some seeds anyway. They are up on the tables to help prevent snails from getting them while they are still so small. Always read the start to finish duration listed on each packet of seed so you know if your plant will have enough time to grow to produce.
Look how happy the tomatoes are a couple weeks after planting, also notice the gravel? Tomatoes do their best in gravel, so keep that in mind. Good luck gardening!!
 Beds rotatilled several times
Bamboo and twine for tomato vines to grow on

Bamboo structure for beans and peas to grow up

Back yard Straw Garden

With very little usable garden space in our yard we had to make do with what we could use. This space  where we had to cut down a blue spruce seemed to be just right. The blue spruce was unfortunately growing sideways and almost fell on the neighbors house this year.
I had some cardboard from a friend moving and I bought a single bale of straw.
The area was already less "weedy" because the tree debris, so it was meant to be, since no grass was there growing already.
We laid out the cardboard where wanted to stop the weeds from growing.
I even had it resting on the back fence wall to keep the neighbors weeds out too.
Start laying out straw over whole area about 2 feet deep.

Make a nest with straw at bottom and holding up sides as a dirt holder and weed barrier.
Fill with soil and re- build nest. I laid rows with in the the bed. The back row has sunflowers, popcorn, and garbanzo beans planted there. The front row has summer squash and zuchinni's. The barrels have cantelope growing in them. This cheap and efficient gardening method is great because you can expand a little each year, use it as a compost during the winter months and the straw gets really warm so it kills weeds below and increases soil temp for really great produce production.
