Community Garden 2012

Welcome to our community garden space.
Just grab a tool and start where ever you like.
Heck we'll even pour ya a glass of wine if you like ;)
Since I do not have much space of my own I have asked to utilize and help with a garden space at some friends house. This is great for me because I am highly motivated, will get to use as much produce as I like, and have partners to work with in the garden. Here are my two besties helping get motivated to start working.
Planting some lovely tomatoes and creating a nice walkway between the rows. My nephew is only 2 but we let him help, I believe that is how one develops a lifelong interest in gardening.

This is our large space, so large we have decided that its too much for our first year so we will be using about 3/4 of the space for gardening and 1/4 for a safe fire area.
We got a late start, but decided to plant some seeds anyway. They are up on the tables to help prevent snails from getting them while they are still so small. Always read the start to finish duration listed on each packet of seed so you know if your plant will have enough time to grow to produce.
Look how happy the tomatoes are a couple weeks after planting, also notice the gravel? Tomatoes do their best in gravel, so keep that in mind. Good luck gardening!!

Raw Yumm Sauce

This amazing flavored sauce is one either you love or you hate. This sauce is loaded with lots of seasonings and nutritional yeast which has a flavor a lot of people aren't used to, however if you are one who does like it you find you literally be addicted to it. Nutritional yeast is great on popcorn, salads, toast, dressings, and on raw veggies, I eat it on all of these. Not only is the flavor quite unique but its loaded with vitamin B so it very healthy for your brain and body. Vitamin B is  known to be helpful with metabolism and trigger chemicals in your brain that are linked to mood and energy.

Ingredients:

1 cup sprouted garbanzo beans*
1/2 cup almond meal or ground almonds
1/4 cup Tahini or ground sesame seeds
1/2 cup cold pressed olive oil
1/2 cup cilantro
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 tsp of each: cayenne, ground pepper, oregano
1 tsp sea salt
1/4 - 1/2 cup water (dep. on how liquidy you want it)
2 tsp curry powder
1/2 cup nutritional yeast

* (if you need to cook up or used canned beans, however will not be raw if you do this)

Directions:

1) Sprout garbanzo beans at home or use cooked garbanzo beans.

2) If you do not have almond meal and tahini then you will need to do this step first. In a blender or food processor grind each down separately with one of the liquids you will be using for this recipe.

3) Once both are broken down you can add rest of ingredients into blender and puree until very smooth

4) Enjoy this sauce on a bed of rice and beans with avocado, sour cream, and salsa for a filling and wonderful vegetarian dish. See recipe and pictures of finished Yumm Bowl here.

Sprouting Raw Beans at Home

Ingredients:
1 cup dry beans
2-3 cups of water
Mason jar with screen, fabric or nylon top

Directions:
This project takes three days to create.
Day one: Rinse beans and let sit 12 hours in full jar of water soaking in water. Its easiest if you start in the morning or nighttime.
12 hrs later: Rinse beans well, if you like just shake around in mason jar with water a few times. This time DO NOT fill mason jar with water.
Next strain well, then put back into jar and open aired lid and remember NO WATER. I lay the jar upside down for about 5 mins to drain then flip back over to get air all day.
For the next 2-3 Days you will: rinse beans twice a day (remember you can use wastewater to water house plants), strain well, put back in jar to "sprout" more. By the end of day three (or 72 hours after original rinse and soak day). The beans are ready and soft enough to eat at this point you will need to keep them in the fridge.

Use these beans for: raw hummus, yumm sauce or yumm bowls, on salads or just for a snack. They will last a week or so in the refrigerater.

You can also sprout other types of beans and make other "raw" bean dips.
